My sensor/pump keeps peeling off after a few days: how do people make them stick?
If your sensor or pump keeps peeling off before its wear time is up, it is almost always the skin prep and the edges, not anything you are doing wrong. Sweat, showers, skin oils and friction from clothes all work an adhesive loose. Most people fix it with three things: clean, dry, oil-free skin before it goes on, a barrier wipe underneath if the skin needs it, and an overpatch or tape holding the edges down. A sensor that falls off early also takes your low-glucose alarm with it, so keep finger-prick kit as backup.
- Start with clean, dry, oil-free skin: wash without moisturiser, dry fully, and let any wipe evaporate completely before the device touches down.
- An overpatch (a sticky patch that goes over the whole device) or medical tape holds the edges through showers, sweat and sleep.
- A barrier wipe lays a thin protective film between glue and skin, which can improve grip and calm irritation at the same time.
- If the adhesive leaves you itchy, red or blistered, that is a skin reaction (your skin reacting to the glue), and it goes to your team rather than under more tape.
- Losing a sensor early means losing your hypo alarm (the alert that warns you a low is coming), so always keep finger-prick kit within reach.
Why the sticker gives up early
Adhesive has a hard job. It has to hold a plastic device onto skin that sweats, stretches, gets wet and rubs against clothes for anywhere up to ten or fourteen days. The edges are where it starts: once a corner catches on a waistband or a towel, it peels a little more each day. Heat and sweat loosen the glue, water and soap get underneath in the shower, and natural skin oils stop it gripping in the first place. Body hair adds another weak point. None of this is a sign you have difficult or sensitive skin, it is just what these stickers are up against, and it is exactly why a bit of technique makes such a difference.
Getting the skin ready
The single biggest win is preparation, because adhesive grips a clean dry surface far better than an oily damp one. Wash the area with plain soap and water, skip the moisturiser, and dry it completely, some people give it a blast of cool air from a hairdryer to be sure. If the spot is hairy, trimming or shaving it a day before helps the glue reach skin and makes removal less painful. A barrier or skin-prep wipe adds a thin protective film that both improves stick and shields sensitive skin from the adhesive. If you use an alcohol wipe to degrease, let it dry fully first, because applying a device onto a wet wipe traps moisture and does the opposite of what you want. Then press the adhesive down for a good minute so your body heat activates it.
Overpatches, tapes and edge fixes
Once it is on well, the job is holding the edges. An overpatch is a large sticky patch with a hole for the sensor that goes over the top and grips the skin around it, and there are branded ones for specific devices plus cheaper generic rolls and pre-cut patches. Medical tape or kinesiology tape does the same job if you cut a window so nothing presses on the sensor itself. If just one corner lifts partway through, a small strip of tape over that edge often buys you the rest of the wear time. When it is time to come off, take it slowly: an adhesive remover wipe or a little oil loosens the glue so you protect your skin rather than tearing it. Rotating where you place devices gives each patch of skin time to recover between wears.
Showers, swimming, sweat and hot weather
Water and sweat are the biggest day-to-day tests. Most sensors and pumps are built to cope with showering and swimming, but long soaks, hot showers, saunas and hot tubs soften the adhesive and lift the edges, and a heavy sweat in the gym or in hot weather does the same from underneath. A few things help: pat the device dry rather than rubbing it after a shower or swim, put an overpatch or tape over the top before pool sessions, and give sweaty skin a moment to cool and dry before adding any fresh tape. On holiday, sun cream and sea salt around the edges can loosen things too, so keep spare overpatches with you. None of this means you cannot swim or train, it just means the edges need a bit more backup on those days.
What makes adhesion harder or easier
No two people get the same wear, and no two weeks are the same either. A hot week, a sweaty job or a lot of swimming will test any adhesive, while a placement that catches your waistband every time you sit down will lift faster than one tucked out of the way. Skin itself varies: some people find one brand of sensor sticks for the full run and another barely lasts half, so what works for a friend may not be your answer. It is worth trying one change at a time so you learn what actually helps you.
Where adhesion goes wrong

Your sensor sat fine for two days, then a corner lifts after a couple of showers and by day four it is flapping. The edge caught the water and the sweat, which is exactly what an overpatch is for.
You train hard, shower hot, and the adhesive is soft and sliding by the evening. Heat and sweat had loosened the glue, so a barrier wipe underneath and tape over the top hold it through the day.
A few days in, the skin under the adhesive is itchy, red and sore in the shape of the patch. That is a reaction to the glue, not a stickiness problem, so it is one for your team rather than more tape.
