Why eating after exercise is part of the plan with type 1: muscles restock for hours, taking glucose from your food or from your blood.
Eating after exercise does two jobs at once: it feeds the recovery your muscles are doing anyway, and it gives the restocking something to draw on other than your bloodstream. That second job is why recovery food matters more with type 1 than it does for everyone else.

Treating a low and eating for recovery are not the same thing
Worth separating these clearly, because muddling them causes trouble in both directions. Treating a low is an emergency job: fast sugar, a set amount, a wait, and a recheck. It is not a meal, and reaching for a plate of pasta because you are low will leave you low for far longer than you need to be.
Recovery food is the opposite kind of job: not urgent, aimed at hours rather than minutes, and about giving your muscles raw material for the restocking they are going to do regardless. Fast sugar does not do that job well, because it is gone quickly, which is exactly the property you want in a hypo treatment and exactly the wrong one here.
So a session that ended with a low usually needs both, in order: treat the low properly first and let it come up, then eat for recovery once you are actually recovered. Doing the second instead of the first is where people get caught.
What your muscles are doing with it
Exercise spends the fuel stored in your muscles, and once you stop they start refilling. That refilling pulls glucose out of your blood, and it carries on for hours, which is the mechanism behind the delayed low that follows a big session. Eating carbohydrate afterwards means some of that demand is met by your meal rather than by your circulation.
The reason a mix works better than one or the other is timing. Something quicker starts covering the demand straight away; something slower keeps covering it while the restocking continues. A meal that is entirely fast carbohydrate handles the first hour and leaves the rest of the evening uncovered, which can produce exactly the overnight dip it was meant to prevent.
Protein is worth having for the muscle repair side, and it slows a meal down, which is usually helpful here. It also means the meal is still landing later than you might expect, which is a real effect on your glucose curve and worth knowing about rather than being surprised by.
Timing, and the sessions that need it most
Sooner is generally easier than later, mostly because the demand starts as soon as you stop and because a session followed by three hours of nothing is a common setup for a dip. That does not mean rushing: it means having something planned rather than arriving home starving with nothing in.
The sessions that most need thinking about are the long ones, the unusually hard ones, and the first one back after a break, because those spend the most and leave the longest tail. An evening session matters more than a morning one for the simple reason that its restocking window lands across your sleep, where you are least likely to notice anything.
Alcohol afterwards is the case worth flagging on its own. Your liver deals with alcohol before it gets round to releasing stored glucose, so drinking after sport removes the backstop you would otherwise have overnight. Eating properly matters more on those nights, not less, and it is a combination worth discussing with your team rather than working out by trial.
What changes what you need afterwards
A short easy session may need nothing beyond your normal next meal. A long or unfamiliar one leaves a much bigger deficit and a longer tail. Insulin still active from a pre-session meal keeps working through the recovery window and stacks with the restocking. And whether you ate before you started changes the size of the hole you are filling afterwards.
